I got about five or six people in the computer science department at my university hooked on Dwarf Fortress recently. One of them saw me playing and decided to play it just because he wanted to be able to understand the incomprehensible jumble of ASCII.

Lol, yeah, sedimentary is the easiest start. No fire imps, and you learn to use coal and steel. Also, lots of iron.

Hmm.. looking at how books have survived the movie revolution, I think that people are capable of getting ASCII just fine. It's just that most people who are interested in games don't like thinking too hard. Relaxation and all.

My guess is that anyone who reads for leisure should be able to pick up DF easily enough with guidance. Anyone want to test that guess? ;)

Only downside is that it uses the mayday set, but it's a good tutorial. Really good, actually.
