Export bans aren't part of the economy - they'll happen even if you never let the economy activate.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Why are people posting as if export bans had anything to do with the economy? That's just an annoying feature of nobles. Mayors do it before the economy's activated, kings/queens obtained by striking adamantine before the economy's activated do it, and all the post-economy nobles do it just the same if you turn the economy off.

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

Er, no they don't - every king/queen I've ever gotten has had no Preferences due to being created during worldgen (see bug #000220), and they never make production/export mandates, only Demands for special furniture in their rooms.

I keep nobles out of my hair by capping my population, and I also dodge the economy the same way. I hate the economy, and nobles, as well. They are detrimental to megaconstructions.

I never had problems with export bans. It was usually on millstones, battle axes and other stuff I didn't want to export anyway. Sometimes mugs, but I had enough other crafts to cope with that.

I find the economy to be no challenge. I keep the peasants busy pretty much constantly anyway, with hauling stuff created by the producers, and pointless masonry projects.

Right now, I'm engaging in a widespread re-clothing operation for the legendaries, and training up a weaponsmith and armoursmith making copper weapons and armour for the masses in case I have a serious problem once I open the clown car.

Yes, copper sucks for weapons, but it's better than nothing and I have literally got shitloads of the stuff. 350 bars as a buffer, production of axes and shields on repeat, and two smelters turning out copper bars on repeat.
And I still have peasants hauling ore out from the depths of the mines.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

How do you turn off the economy?

...That's the beauty of it -- once it's started, YOU CAN NEVER TURN IT OFF!!!
