Anyone's who's willing to charge against cannon and musket fire with only a dagger and some silk is damn hardcore.

There's your answer.  Silk actually makes a fairly decent protection against pre-20th century infantry guns.  Plus, said guns usually only had one, often hideously inaccurate shot before they closed in - once they did, someone wielding a knife made specifically for close-quarters combat would probably have an advantage over a gun which has some use in close quarters but isn't specialised in it.

Myself, I prefer to look at the culture of those Norsemen who stayed behind in Scandinavia rather than those who wandered off raiding; though the fact that the Norsemen made it to North America back around 1000 AD certainly is an interesting one.
