* No forbidding objects.  If there was a sock in the middle of a goblin seige you can bet your dwarves will charge singlemindedly at it.  And there wasn't a damn thing you could do other than hope they don't get shot while entrance dancing.

It was harder both in good and bad ways. The constant attacks from within made defense a much more active endeavor. There was no such thing as pulling the drawbridge and enjoying a season of peace. That was harder in a good way. The lack of player controls to forbid things, mass designate things, build, and the quirks was maddening and made the game hard for reasons that were just frustrating and infuriating.

It'll be nice when Toady gets the balance back again. Even with Orcs and other nasties modded in, it's just too easy to make unassailable fortresses.

Yeah, there's basically never any worries about attacks from within, and it's actually quite possible to become self sustaining (you can even moat off an area).  Maybe the Subterranian Creatures update could help, or possibly making useful features (underground rivers, underground lakes, magma related stuff) more hardcore in terms of producing enemies.
