Maybe when books and paper get implemented, we can have paper money as an option (more expensive to produce, but a dwarf can keep all of their money on them at all times).
WTF? The entire POINT of paper money is that it's cheap to produce, in contrast to coins which get their value from rare metals such as gold. PER DEFINITION paper money is cheaper to produce.

Paper was most certainly not cheap in the slightest prior to the industrial revolution. Before then it was absurdly valuable compared to its worth today. Making paper without the assistance of mechanization is really quite labor-intensive.

Dwarves do have fairly advanced mechanisms.
If they can build a water-powered binary counter (somebody do this now!), they can build a paper maker.
Then there's the type of paper.
Using spider silk would be best for paper money out of realism. Rope reeds could be used to make a sort of papyrus. Regular paper could be made out of logs and would be made faster than the others, but at a lower quality.

The binary counter is a reality. Just thought you should know.

Heck, didn't somebody figure out and make a working analog counter?
