I like to mint some coins to see what appears on them, and then lock them up before the tax collector arrives.  My last set: A dwarf surrounded by dwarves on both sides.

Man, tossing a coin in that fortress must be boring.

It's possible that each side is a DIFFERENT dwarf surrounded by dwarves; to really find out you'd have to go in in adventure mode and check.

I'm willing to bet that, say, they're two different dwarf mayors being elected; that is often what "dwarf surrounded by dwarves" ends up being.

Sort of like having a coin with Bush on one side and Obama on the other.

We all know what side of that coin you'd want to pick when tossing it.

Dwarf or dwarf?

At least one of the sides turned to killer dwarf eating Giant Sparrow the next year.

Maybe when books and paper get implemented, we can have paper money as an option (more expensive to produce, but a dwarf can keep all of their money on them at all times).

Knowing my dwarves, they'd probably rip up the notes to give change.

Well, strictly speaking, coins have no value in a society where debit cards are in every newborn's hand; coins were a replacement to the barter system.

Of course, the dwarven economy, as it is, has... issues.

WTF? The entire POINT of paper money is that it's cheap to produce, in contrast to coins which get their value from rare metals such as gold. PER DEFINITION paper money is cheaper to produce.

Yet somehow worth more.
I wish coin values are chosen based on how many coins of a particular metal or currently in a fortress. For example, if somebody has 10 stacks of copper coins, but 100 stacks of gold coins, the gold coins would be worth less because there's more of them. It seems silly to me for dwarves to have preset values based on those of other races. It's incredibly easy for dwarves to get metals that their value should be based on what's readily available.

Coins are good for an adventurer fortress.  I think the dwarves will only recognize copper, silver, and gold as actual currency, so you can mint some platinum or aluminum coins and have nice, light stacks of throwing weapons.  Which rapidly becomes large untidy pages full of single coins as you go throwing them.

Well, aluminum is light. Platinum is significantly denser than lead.

There's a thing called "payday" when you open your locked coin vault only once in a long while.
I only open mine to bury people.
