Possibly it's a 'you didn't delete your data folder' problem and the cage is made out of nothing, or some arbitrary material.  Is it by chance a 'metal cage'?

Maybe he was a legendary stripper and his legendary ass was too hot for his clothes?

I just had a similar experience. I had a couple rows of cage traps in my entrance hall, and a few batches of goblin ambushers were getting themselves caught. Suddenly I saw smoke, and immediately hit K to see if I could figure out what was on fire. In two of the cages, the goblins and all flammable materials were happily burning away.

I have lava about 12 squares away, but I haven't seen any fire snakes at all (for some reason lots of swarms of flies over my lava though). Iron grates keep the imps away. The cages were just regular metal cages... but I did get them from a dwarven caravan instead of making them myself.

Not sure.

I don't know what could be cause of your fire problems. I have had a moment that just as soon as immigration wave came, a GIANT WALL OF FIRE followed them  :P

anyways here's a fav "combusted" moment. http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=30932.0

It's the leading natural cause of death in dragons.

This is not a bug. It is a feature.
