Can't Smelt Pig Iron / Steel?
« on: March 24, 2009, 06:52:26 pm »

I have iron, Dolomite (flux), and a magma smelter, but the add new tasks option doesn't have smelt pig iron on it.  The magma smelter is working because it smelts other stuff (native copper, metal objects) just fine.

edit: nevermind, just read that I still need charcoal for steel even on a magma smelter... doh

Yep, steel is basically iron alloyed with carbon so it needs extra carbon to be made in the form of coal. Pretty cool actually. Somewhat tree-unfriendly though!

Of note, the magma forge has no advantage for smelting steel.  The coal which you use in a regular furnace is able to double as the additional carbon for your reaction.

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of harvesting trees. What are the odds of finding coal on a map? I'd assume I should be looking in sedimentary areas?

You could always import charcoal and bituminous coal. And yes, coal is pretty much in the sedimentry areas, so you are out of luck.

I've never been able to get merchants to bring me alot of coal even when I request it.

So I request wood from merchants, even at maxed out priority it won't cost more than 5-7 currency for each unit, and with a couple years of trading each merchant should be bringing 30-60 units. you'll have to make it into charcoal but a single wood burner will be able to handle it all.
