Hi I recently got a hammerer, tax collector, baron and baroness.......throughout when I had time I named my dwarfs and apart from peasants I would give them all there own room, shortly after the baron moved into my room area, which had loads of residents housed, I went back today and tried to assign my new immagrants to a room but only a fraction of the list showed, their names were all brown coloured, not sure if that has any relevance, but the ones that showed already had rooms assigned

I also have a tax collector and noticed rooms were taxed so I figured that would be whats causing the problem, I then proceeded and made the room rent free but still I cannot assign my empty rooms to much of my new immagrants? Any idea why this is? I do know about + and minus to scroll up and down however theres maybe 20 people come up for room assigned yet there are easily over 52 immagrants that should be in the list

That means the Dwarven Economy has started.  One of the effects is that dwarves now have to pay for their rooms, and the only ones that can be assigned theirs for free are nobles and legendaries.

You will never be able to train all your dwarves up into the legendaries. The key, if you are going to leave economy on, is to have lots of rooms of different qualities: crappy little holes in the wall for untrained haulers, 2x3 for brute craftsdwarves, 3x3 moderately adorned for skilled craftsdwarves, 3x5 rooms of bling for your handful of really awesome crafters. You get the idea.

Me... I just turn the economy mode off.
Scroll down in the init.txt file in the data folder until you see [ECONOMY:YES]. Change it to [ECONOMY:NO]

And now the thread is about starfish porn.
...originally read that as 'perpetual motion pants' and thought how could I have missed this??

I begs to differ  ;D I've trained most of my population in few fortresses to legendary through mass-working and pump operation, it takes a couple years or so. Though childrens have to be trained up as soon as they mature, it's not as bad. But really, just assign cheap rooms, maybe a few assigned beds in a small 3x3 rooms should devalue the room enough for even the poorest ones to get by (I uses 6 beds, a coffer, and a cabinet in a 3x3 room once economy hits, a bit low-valued but it's reliable for me )

Read Nist Akath if you haven't already.  Granted, that's a 30+ year old fort, but Mayday did, and so can YOU  ;D

I play with the economy off, though.  But I still have a habit of just giving everyone unsmoothed, 1x4 rooms.  Normally without doors.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Note that now your economy has started it's too late to turn it off now. But you can set your room rent to 0 via the same init.txt file.
