1. Create an adventurer, keeping in mind not to use up all the stat points. Keep around 10-20 uninvested.

 2. Retire in a town near the cave of misery. Go back to step 1 x10

 3. Create your real adventurer, using all of your points.

 4. Recruit them if you can find them.

 5. Assault cave.

 6.???

 7. Either death or glory!

Too much cheating for me.
That's not cheating.
That's game mechanics.
Adventurers can recruit anybody who has any ability in a combat skill (greater then 1 EXP, basically) that also has less of it then they do.
If you consider that cheating..  Well, by extension, you consider pretty much any of the effective ways to go about Adventure Mode successfully cheating.

Nah, I decapitate random people on the street by throwing coins in real life too.
...Look at the actual statements made in the list.  There was NO statement about coins at all.

Ha! I once got ambushed by a pack of wolves. When I got control, they were already all dead.

They were counterattacked to death before I could do anything.

EDIT: I had swam about 5 days, spent 12 hours choking a zombie groundhog and another 12 letting the thing try to hit me and fail.

How come I'm not nearly as lucky as any of you? I just tried the throw-rocks-at-myself training to Legendary (which, by the way, didn't get me any points of Toughness, just Mighty and Extremely Agile), and I still got my leg broken and my throat strangled by the first cyclops I saw. I haven't even had one adventurer last more than a few fights ever since version 39 came out. :-\

Except one tigerman wrestler who took out a whole town of slugmen, but I accidentally forgot to give slugmen the [EQUIPS] tag, and I had an invincible swordsman following me until he got eaten by lions shortly after we finished off the town, so I'm not sure if that counts.

I don't know, since I have yet to try Adventure Mode, but all this 'throw rocks at trees' and similar 'training' sounds incredibly boring. And why would you want an invincible warrior before you even start to play, anyway?

Do you really have to do all this stuff? This is making Adventure Mode sound really unappealing.

Hi WCG!

No, you do not need that extra-training.

However, you need to be aware that your initial character is mediocre in the greater scheme of things, so if you go right out to kill a giant or dragon, you will just add to those foes' kill lists.

Basically, I suggest that you first travel a little bit around the map, visit various towns/retreats/halls and collect information about the surrounding areas. Visit forests and plains where normal predators like cougars are reported (cougars are better than wolves because they don't come in packs) and first do a little bit of hunting. Besides giving your character some extra experience, it also helps you get the hang of the combat system. As with everything else in DF, adventure mode has a lot of interesting details to watch out for.

When you feel confident that you know what you are doing, go to a cave and try to hunt down some of the regular cave denizens (lizardmen, troglodytes, giant bats,...). If something tells you "To prepare to die!", run away as quickly as possible - that's the boss out to turn you into a pulp in no time.

Once you are confident about your ability to fight cave denizens and also packs of wolves without problems, go to a town surrounded by caves only featuring semimegabeasts (cyclops, giant, ettin). Get your first quest there, which will be to kill one of those semimegabeasts.

Well, this is how your career as a dragon slayer can begin.

No problem, Deathworks. Usually, in RPG's, I especially enjoy the beginning, when your character is still weak and clumsy. (The kind of character where, when he slaps a mosquito, the mosquito strikes back.) I certainly don't expect to take on a dragon right from the start.

Anyway, I'd like to try Adventure Mode, but I can't even find enough time to play Dwarf Mode as much as I want. So Adventure Mode will have to wait a bit.

Thanks for the info!

Hi WCG!

I can sympathize with the time problems. My own computer is currently running maintenance, so I have to take a break, but once it is finished, there is this fortress waiting for preparations of trade depot movement.

Anyhow, adventure mode does have a lot to offer, even though many things are still somewhat abstract. For most fun, I suggest having history initially hidden in the world you adventure in, so that talking to people and hearing about history has a stronger feeling of discovery (too bad legends mode can't be accessed during adventure play).

As for character skill development, you should get quite satisfied with it. While throwing is seriously messed up, regular melee weapon combat shows quite a nice development (although the random attribute raises can affect your development rather strongly).

And sneaking if you expect people with ranged weapons to be nearby is not cheating, I would say. It does sound like common sense to try not to get noticed by the guys with the guns.

Anyhow, please allow me to quote words of wisdom from the good ol' times of dungeoneering (I wonder how many people here would know where this quote comes from :) :) :) :) ):
Quote from: Sirtech
He who turns and runs away,
lives to run another day.

Personally, I would suggest you do a little bit of adventure mode parallel to you regular game play. As you do not have to take care of 200 characters and 2000 jobs at the same time, it is much easier to take a break and come back again after a while. But that is just my opinion.

Have fun!

Hi WCG!

You're reinforcing bad habits here.
For one, we can see your name to the left of every post you make.  No need to sign them.  Second, we can see who you're addressing via simply looking directly above.
You don't need to format it like it's a letter to somebody.  Furthermore, by doing so, you're making the page longer than it needs to be.  Posts should be short, concise, and to the point.

And uh, we're currently undergoing a few major additions to Adventure mode.  Namely the ability to gather food/drink yourself rather then relying on a town.
Coming soon-ish: Mining/chopping trees/building a house.  Should be fun.
