Technically a ballista is a torsion powered crossbow used by the romans to throw spears and small rocks.

What we have in DF is more akin to a giant siege crossbow.

Wait...

crap.  I got the Onager mixed up with something else.  I was sure that the Romans used different (but similarly-acting) weapons for firing stones vs. bolts: Ballista for bolts, Onager for stones. 

...back to the ol' drawing board.

Balistas did fire stones as well, they weren't very big though.

They also had miniature versions called Scorpions which fired little spears. Some were wagon mounted.

I think in-game greaves are actually more like tassets than cuisses.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.  Like I said, I seem to have gotten it mixed up.


Edit:
Here we go: the Scorpio.  It looked a lot like a ballista, but was smaller and was used as essentially a giant, bolt-throwing sniper weapon.  That's what I was thinking of.
