I devote a 5x5 space to the dining room. 9 chairs and tables, and it doubles as a meeting hall. I also give each dwarf a 3x1 living area. If you exclude the door, it's only a 2x1 living area. I see no problem with it as they are all ecstatic.

I'm either generous to my dwarves or sadistic to my Legendary Miner; I give every dwarf their own 3x3 room, and put in it (in this order) a door, a bed, a chair, a table, a cabinet, and a coffer. I then have my Mayor/Manager/Bookkeeper/Broker/Legendary Engraver smooth and engrave each room. Yeah, it's time-consuming, wasteful, and nets me WAAAY too many soapers per Immigration Wave (of which immediately become Wrestlers in my army), but my Dwarves live like friggin' Kings.
