I've already made the arbalests. They kick (or rather, pierce) ass.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the compound bow design, other than the fact that dwarves are supposed to dislike bows, and there are better ways to make use of arrows.

Maybe make...oh, what was the name from Krondor?  A Bessy Mauler.  A crossbow so big and powerful it fires full-sized arrows.  The Desert Eagle of Crossbows; a Hand Ballista.  Or maybe the Barret Crossbow.

Get a power boost but probably need a longer reload time...maybe have to use a mechanism in addition to the wood or bone or metal used in crossbow construction.  Maybe make it so you have to make it out of metal, to withstand the forces involved.
Hah, instead of the Bowyer's Workshop, have it constructed in the Siege workshop, from one or two (rather than the full three) siege weapon parts.
A siege part, a mechanism, and some metal, perhaps?

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

Like encrusting them with gems and selling to merchants? =)

P.S. You can't make any weapon at siege workshop.

No, but you build siege parts.  Use one of those at the bowyers shop to produce a...'Skeletal Eagle'?  A 'Desert Carp'?

By the way, I've always wanted to refer to arrows as "Fin-stablized armor-piercing rounds".

Bowyer's workshop makes things of logs only (or bones). And you can't specify the material subtype too. So the bowyer will grab the first raw log/bone to do the work. No chance to use siege parts. And also if you'd make a thing at siege workshop it would be used as ammo for ballistae too.
