[PAID] Writers Needed for Multiplayer Roguelike
« on: August 06, 2021, 03:15:56 pm »

The stasis chamber hisses softly around you. Artificial fluids built up inside your ears begin to retreat as the cryoplasm drains slowly.  Breathing comes naturally, at first. And then the tickle of a hundred nanites filtering your oxygen forces a cough or two of surprise. Beneath new skin a fresh infusion of blood pulses with the cadence of tribal drums. Your thoughts cascade and it all makes sense again. You open your eyes to the dull interior of a starship.

Apsis Online operates entirely within the command line.  The game environment is presented in ASCII and each planet and landing site visited by players are procedurally generated. While currently not the focus, ground/hand-to-hand combat will be a real-time/turn-based hybrid system inspired by TomeNET and DF Adventure Mode. Space combat will operate similar Classic Battleship (in space).  Which should lend well to how I plan to handle conflicts on a larger scale in the future.

The engine is custom and uses a combination of real-time and turn-based events to handle things like chat and animations, making the world feel a lot more alive. Having a built in forum and social system was part of an idea to have a self-sufficient platform for players to operate in as well. I went into a lot more detail in the original devblog for version 1 if interested.

This project had been a hobby for most of its seven year existence. Having begun as a single-player game called First Paradise. Its spiritual successor has since gone on to establish itself as its own thing and it's becoming too much for me to handle alone! And that's why I need you! To hit my goal of releasing a playable Steam build by the end of September.

To do this I need two narrative designers. Since storytelling is at the heart of Apsis Online. You will be responsible for fleshing out existing existing lore, designing items/equipment and maintaining the world wiki. At $0.05/word this could be a fun gig for any student or entry-level writers looking to add to their portfolios.  Having an interest in blockchain is a plus since this project is backed by a blockchain game studio.

Feel free to shoot an email over to support@roguemicro.io if interested. And please do include your Discord in the email since it will be the main method of communication (outside of the in game platform).

Hope the search goes well, probably not the forum to advertise -primarily as I think posting what is essentially volunteer applications is not what most folks think is appropriate, I can't be the arbiter of that tho haha. I'd certainly join up, but seeing as this is unpaid I don't really think I have the time or ability to put into this.

EDIT: will note that if a paid position for narrative stuff is open I’d be happy to do it, just that I’m not willing atm to do this kinda stuff for exposure :P

Was just able to go ahead and clear a budget and so this role is now paid! I started out as a writer myself so it was always the intention for sure.  It is an indie project so the rate not much at $0.05 a word but could be cool for any entry-level candidates.

The game sounds interesting, but I don't think I have enough skill as a writer to join. I do sometimes talk over game development ideas with people, so I'll watch things progress from the discord server.

Fort is running at 21 FPS, the ground is having a panic attack in places, and what looks like a conga line of zombified Hungry Heads has formed on (I think) Z-level 32 of the caverns.
I love dwarven status reports.

Shoot, I'll throw my application in. I enjoy writing as a pass time and have done some (mostly incomplete  :-[) narratives / let's plays / forum games here. There are two really good examples of my writing in my sig and here are two other topics I think display some of my ability (if you want to browse some more most of my topics in the profile ->show posts -> topics area are also mostly writing-oriented):

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175055.msg8056360#msg8056360
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=176800.msg8161735#msg8161735

I have to say I also have an interest in indie game design / development and have done work on open source projects in the past. Github here: https://github.com/Vivalas
Throwing this bit in here since while it's not on the menu, so to speak, I can work my way around Git and have solid programming knowledge to aid in integrating the writing into the game, if that's needed at all for the project. The roguelike/MUD-like also fits into a genre I enjoy and the game fits a niche I've been looking for in the genre so I think it could be fun as well  ;).

I know I have a bad habit of not finishing things I start on this board, but that's more because of the "thread management" stuff than the writing. I love the writing and could focus more energy on that if it's just solely writing. My schedule is a bit tight being a full-time engineering student but if you believe I meet your needs I'd be happy to do my best to work with you to see if my schedule is appropriately suited for the needs of the project.
