Can you decorate named "artifact" weapons?
« on: October 21, 2018, 05:11:56 pm »

For gameplay reasons I have not been making dwarves name specific weapons (I give inferior named weapons to adventurers!), but now that my fortress has begun to decorate excessively, is it possible to decorate weapons that have already been named? Or are they stuck as boring old -bronze battle axe- and +kumquat wood shield+ with no ☼<<[item]>>☼ to make it interesting?

So, I guess, how artifact are named artifacts?

You can't, as far as I know. They do have standard value (as opposed to mood artefacts, which are 10x more expensive), standard stats (often crappy), and are stuck with it. If you can't look at them anymore, magma or a bridge can solve that.

You can make dwarves name weapons? I thought it always happened automatically, with the player having no control.

You have some control of what dwarf does with the weapon/shield. Enough sparring/killing, and they name it. Tell them to put it down and pick another one up before that, and they don't.

Note on stats of named weapons/shields: They are supposed to get a familiarity bonus for the dwarf, i.e. be better than other -axe-s. That's about it, I think.
