Training child animals
« on: August 30, 2018, 12:07:48 am »

If an animal child is already trained when born, will your animal trainers ever go train it? My trainers aren't going near the baby skunks and drathlas (both set to any trainer and can be pathed to). It's been about 3 months since they were born.

Caged animals are trained only when they revert fully, while pastured ones should be retrained when they drop levels (not sure if it's every time). However, I've sometimes seen it take quite some time before training is performed even when trainers are available.

Are you sure all your trained animals can be pathed to? I don't mean the babies I mean any animal that is trained but not tame. Animal trainers seem to work on a list when it comes to retraining animals and they insist on going in order and it can't be done if an animal is in a cage. If there's an animal on their list that's inaccessible for retraining they won't move on to the next and instead will wait around until they can either reach that specific animal or it gets removed from the list such as by dying or fully reverting to wild. This can cause all animal training to grind to a halt as every trainer is waiting in line to access one specific trained animal. If this is the case for you make the animal(s) accessible or set the trainer to none and you should get them to start working down their list again.

Animals born tame shouldn't require training. The only training available is optional war and hunting training.

I use dedicated trainers.  One or two whose only other job is lever pulling and maaaaybe construction.  But yes, the ai for training places it very low.  Training a near-feral bear to not maul the royal liaison is a lower priority than loitering even.

Training is a high-priority job that only generates once per season when the animal is about to drop a training level.  There is a window in which the "train" job generates on the animal, and if that window passes before the trainer can get to it, the animal drops a training level with the job disappearing.  It will not reappear until the following season.  It seems that all trained animals in the fort generate this job at roughly the same time, leading to animal trainers spending most of their lives idling and then frantically trying to get to all the animals in a short window.

For newly born or hatched animal children, they may be born during this training window, in which case there is a chance they will be trained immediately and tamed.  Otherwise, you just wait a season and when their training level would otherwise drop they will be trained and tamed.  There is literally no way to make a training job generate on a non-wild animal.  The game does that automatically once per season.
