DF took the "Simulation" route.

There was never any plan different. The dev plan has laid the simulation intentions bare for a decade.

I saw people saying DF "copied" Rimworld as now you can rescue people, a feature Rimworld has for quite some time, while in fact that was on the roadmap years before Rimworld was even a thing.

This thread made me play again the last 2D version. Damn it is hard... I have been wrecked by gorillas, and the initial cave river breach flood. I also kind of miss the old easy (and buggy) military system without uniforms. The farming changes were very bad if we compare 0.21 to the present day situation. Mud not evaporating was the worst change ever. Perhaps there is a DFHack solution?

In any case, a lot of the planned "simulation" stuff could have been achieved without ever transitioning to 3D. Not all of it, but a lot of it. I feel like that the latest big releases have been finally getting it all together after a long time. I guess that this is what we get for DF inheriting Armok as Toady's and Threetoe's main fantasy project and it is cool. 8)

Don't forget explosion spells in Myth & Magic, coming in a few years. Sadly, procedurally generated, so yay for endless rerolling.

Yeah, that release should include preset spells.
