you dont even need axes. you can swarm-wrestle a few to death and equip their weapons to slaughter the rest.

Maybe abandon, go into adventure mode, slaughter the entire kobold population, jump into the magma, reclaim?  In theory they should all stay dead unless a migrant group made it to them.

If it's by a volcano, wall off the front of their cave, dig an access shaft into the top of the cave, and flood it with magma.

You're gonna run into problems because while the regular kobolds will die like groundhogs, kobold guards can be VERY nasty.

DF coding seems to imply that kobolds are predatory and posessed with a grim intelligence--they need meat and gold and aren't smart enough to raise their own animals.

Damn, I checked all the mountain volcanoes and none of them had critters. I assume that caves don't occur in plains. Or will any magma location do? Because there doesn't seem to be a lot of volcanoes on this map  :(

Build a large tower, the base of which should be next to a river or lake. Not neccesarily a wide tower, but it must reach 1-3 z-levels above the entrance to the Kobold caves. Set up a pumping system (but don't start it) and build a narrow psuedo-channel over to the Kobold entrance. Start the pumping (if you must use a lake, create a REDUNDANTLY-FLOODGATED U-Bend). Watch as the Tower of Death rains its ungodly havoc on the poor Kobolds.

Oh, and if you still want to use your sissy magma, yes, any magma will do, should you be able to find it.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

they occur on flat land fine. if you go in adventure mode and ask around a bit to get them all revealed, you will find they can appear any place you can settle
