I'd forgotten about designating the content of engravings. I'm adding that to my routine.

I like having round ends to my temples, and I always make the roof at least two z's deep. I make a large non-specific temple, and then as dorfs do awesome things, I often get a temple set up somewhere in the fort for their specific favourite deity. Temples tend to be deep in stone, I don't think I've ever dug a temple out of earth. I love making them from marble and getting them smoothed and decorated. I put statues and chests in the hallway on the way into the temple, and make big decorated doors for the dorfs to enter the temple through.

I always put instruments in all my temples, and buy them from elves and humans as well as making my own dorfish instruments. I put in chests for them to put instruments into, which they always do. I've never seen anyone play the instruments, or dance in a temple, even though I now start out with musicians and dancers in my first seven.

I think there has to be some kind of music/dance associated with the worship of that deity? I've seen dwarves dancing and playing music but it's always to the same deity.

I think there has to be some kind of music/dance associated with the worship of that deity? I've seen dwarves dancing and playing music but it's always to the same deity.

10x10 or 5x5 and the music & instrument selection is very particular and opaque if you haven't seen it before, stationary instruments & boxes also block the dancing floor so have to be placed elsewhere, plus migrants have to know the dances particularly also.

They willl tell stories also if theres some source material, i once had a death-shrine that constantly repeated stories about how 1 particular night troll began worshipping that god, it'll probably be inundated with creation myth by the time the magic arc rolls around.

...well, it will when the update fixing the weapon trap crashes comes out, for me :P

Say, is it possible to add several zones to the same location, making multi-story temples? Basement catacombs and all that?

Technically the amount of areas across z levels is unlimited, that catacomb would be part of the temple's entity & people would go to worship there (odd) and treat it as a extension of that occupation area rather than a full continuous building or anything.

A tavern for instance can be situated in many different rooms but will abide by the rules of the original location in respect to how many mugs & instruments they stock. Unless some different function like visitor rooms are established.

To specify the content of an engraving, use "D" on the tile immediately after designating it to be engraved. Once you leave the designate menu, you can't give more details unless you remove and reapply the designation.

I haven't had dances, music or stories in my temples, but my dorfs tend to congregate in the tavern when they aren't actively playing. I may have to explore a little more to see if I can get them to show up!

I usually make a simple large room with a ton of statutes and something retentive to the god like a stock pile of gems in a temple for the gem god.

Yeah, I just developed a habit of linking the temple and tavern locations to a table.

Are there known benefits or detriments to using separate temples for the deities, compared to using a single generic temple? I was wondering if it would effect the likelyhood of dwarfs starting up ritual dances, if it makes them happier, or if cause buggy issues.
there's no change to the ritual dance chances that I know of by using a generic temple, but some deities need specific temples to them or there followers can't worship then, just build a generic temple, check every now then your dwarves thoughts, and if they have the "haven't been able to pray to X" message, build a specific temple for that deity

I thought that bug of dwarves praying over and over to same deity and not others was supposed to be fixed?

I suppose one advantage general temple has is that the dances are seen by everyone.

I tend to make a fairly big and mostly open space with four really nice statues, then i divide it into four equal sized temples with a minimum of overlap between them. Then i dedicate each quarter to one of the most popular deities in the fort. As population increases, i might make another identical one on the other side of the floor, so that it's mirrored, making it eight temples.
