I really don't care if DF falls into these "tropes". It doesn't matter if it's been done millions of times, because Dwarf Fortress makes it awesome anyway. This is assuming that I understand the concept of "tropes" correctly. If not, ignore my babbling.

Well, use of a trope isn't necessarily bad. Take dwarves vs. elves for an example; the moment we heard the elf merchants arriving, I think we all expected them to be arrogant jerks about our dwarves.

Which they were. It makes you feel more familiar in the world and nobody is insisting it should be otherwise. We simply understand that it's something that has been done before and will be done again. Using a trope isn't necessarily bad, and it doesn't mean the work in question isn't original or innovative.

I still don't like the idea of rampaging across the internet labelling everything all DF-ish.   DF is awesome without people rushing random websites about it.

EDIT: *nevermind. The summary of my post was Advertising=bad, getting the word out to people you've talked with before=good*

It's important to wear lots of face paint while you program. And you can type with your long Gene Simmons tongue.

Speaking as a TvTropes regular, I'd love it if someone were to write Dwarf Fortress up. Despite the name, the wiki has expanded to cover movies, videogames, comics and [obscure media here] and writeups of cult favouries are exactly what we want.

Re. confusion over tropes: a trope is any recurring plot or gameplay device. For the purposes of the wiki, it's 'anything you've seen more than twice'. Tropes are value-neutral and definately not a sign that they're 'good' or 'bad' or should or shouldn't be done.

And for Armok's sake don't worry about sounding like advertising! If you sound too shill-ish then you might be gently mocked and the page edited down a bit... maybe. Don't count on it. The whole wiki runs on nothing but geekish love.
