I made a civ of bear/dwarf hybrids once.

It's up on the mod forum somewhere.

Wait, I can't quite picture this.

Is it a bear with a dwarf's head and bearded, walking on all fours on occasion?

Or is a bi-ped, short, stout, sturdy dwarf body with a head of a bear, and beaded?

Clawed, with grasping for mining, I assume.

Or is it more like a centaur structure?  quadraped bear body, with upper torso of a dwarf with arms and head?

This one! They get claws and a bite attack whilst retaining beards. It was my very first posted mod, so it probably barely bearly works, though I seem to have claimed no errors. In checking this, it has 25 downloads. Wowee!

If I recall I made them stronger and less agile as well.

I read that as Beer instead of Bear, and was picturing dwarves that consisted of goopy alcohol. I can't imagine they would last long.

Also, PTW some more of that tasty, tasty science.

One idea for a non-dfhack method for inducing marriage potential would be to set up some kind of ridiculous syndrome that applied the aforementioned [ORIENTATION] tags. That would hypothetically overwrite the adventurer defaults, wouldn't it? You could apply it to the species you wanted to make populations of, maybe justify it as "mating season pheromones"...

Any results with Generation 2 so far? The initial populace of ex-adventurers was one thing, but are the native-born animal people willing to procreate after aging sufficiently? You could run dfhack's rejuvenate if you want to set them to 20 years old instantly.

The idea of ridiculous, personality-level syndromes that add tags like that is very tempting for !!Science!! of my own come to think of it....

I prefer modding df to make everyone bi, but I don't typically play generational forts
