There were no muggers dressed as police officers at all, apparently.

They weren't even swimmers, they were just dolphins in human-suits.

The question remains though, why make this up?

The reasoning behind it appears to be that, 1-they'd supposedly face sanctions from the US delegation for misconduct or somesuch; 2-apparently it was a specially wild night at the french house, and prob cheated on their girlfriends/wives; and 3-they got into a fight and broke stuff, meaning they can banned from future competitions.

Of course, this means that they made a choice, and that choice was to commit a crime, IE false communication of a crime, a rather minor offense, but a crime nonetheless, meaning they just made things even worse for themselves. Plus, trying to escape the country during the investigations, specially after the judge ruled for you stay for the time being, is also something that is judicially relevant.

Investigation is still ongoing though, but so far things aren't looking too great for them. They can appeal to said ruling (if they haven't already), but me thinks its very unlikely it'll be succesful. I've personally read the ruling and its has a solid base that is reinforced by br jurisprudence (specially now they've actualy attempted to evade jurisdiction), so its unlikely they'll be getting their passports back until everything's settled.

I guess they'll be doing a few months of sports training at the gym of a Brasilian prison. I don't think they'll get a swimming pool though.

Yeah, turns out that they had vandalized a gas station and a security guard was there apparently (why they weren't arrested on the spot, I don't know), and Lochte was drunk apparently. So, yeah, the question becomes, drunk or not, 'why would they risk an international incident and do something like this?'

True, theres always a few who do stupid things, but still....

I could only find it in either local (and thus in pt-br) or australian news sites, but some australian athletes got themselves arrested.
