Boston tends to be a little snooty... the kind of people who speak Latin, play 5 instruments, and compare Socrates and Ibn Rushd. Sydney is a little more B12-ish, where you can talk with the cashier of a fast food joint on how to build giant robots or why aliens haven't discovered us yet.

From an American perspective, Boston tends to stand out for its blue collar working class too. I've also heard and seen that there is a strong element of racism in Boston, mostly directed toward black people.

Also if you're willing to take a paycut, there is plenty of opportunity for software developers in the US outside of Silicon Valley. Sure, you won't be making 6 figures a year. But the cost of living is also a fraction of what it is on the coasts.
