New submenu to Conversation Menu
« on: March 01, 2016, 06:21:46 pm »

Currently you can open submenus with "Express your emotions" and "State your values." I've noticed NPCs can have discussions on various topics. It'd be great to have a new submenu of that sort: "Discuss topics".

Writing seems to revolve around the things your character has done and books read, so discussion would be based on the same things. If you've read a good deal about siphons, you'd discuss siphons. If you engrave bones, you'd discuss engraving.

...I'm sorry, I think it already exists. Check "mention thoughts" or some submenu like that.

They're about the same thing, except your suggestion is a little more long-term.

"Express your emotions" only has a state feelings of X.

I'd want this to be more along the lines of the interactive nature of "State your values"–– so yes, more long-term.

State your values is basically what you are talking about.  You are (presumably) discussing a matter in a neutral (nuances of) or a biased way.  What is missing is any connection between actual events in the world and values, so that if you or somebody else brings up a particular actual game it can result in a discussion about appropriate values.  For instance news of war breaking out can cause discussions on the value of peace or of martial prowess.

Ultimately it could even be that your character biases their reporting of events according to their values, so a pacifist characters reporting of the outbreak of war will annoy a militaristic character and vice versa.

Oh, you mean like rumors!  :P

Like when the tall farmer says, "this dragon ate our sheep! showing no mercy, he broke down this door! and also he killed the king," and the squat smith says "it was inevitable"?

"Knowing no mercy, my neighbor stole my booze."
...
"Oh, also he's a vampire, or whatever."

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

A wizard has turned you into a wagon. This was inevitable (Y/y)?

This is definitely already in the game. "Bring up specific incident or rumor", the very first thing in the menu.

Apologies to all for not being clear. My suggestion was not made very well. Sorry for that.

"Bring up specific incident or rumor" concerns a deed you performed or something you witnessed. It's not discussion. Neither is "Express your emotions."

The closest thing to this "State your values" and somewhat in the manner GoblinCookie described.

Right now your character hears a dwarven scholar say "I discussed engineering, etc..." Your character can't say "I discussed engraving today." If your character could, it should open a branch of responses. A non-engraving NPC might respond by saying "That is/isn't interesting." But perhaps a bone carver might have more to comment on. In light of how future combat styles might work where Toady mentioned on the dev page that you could learn moves from others, perhaps Discussion would also enable some sort of gain per the topic discussed.

You can though, you can express your emotions about the matter of how you did something today.
