Wells
« on: February 27, 2016, 11:47:26 am »

So wells are something I've typically never had a problem with.  However the new version I'm seeing a new reaction in my well and trying to figure out why or what to tweak to "fix" this...

In my setup I dig a two level pit to hold the water.  I then dig from the water source (river) down to this pit.  I set a floodgate in the access tunnel and a pressure plate in the pit edge set to Water>1-6 don't affect and then hook that PP up to the floodgate so when it reaches level 7 it trips the floodgate to cut off access to the pit for any more water.

Doing this I end up with a full pit under my well-room.  I channel a hole in the room above the water laden pit and build a well.  I've done this forever with no issues.  Now, I've got water spewing up through the hole into my well room and flooding it.  I had to abandon one fortress (on the new version) because I couldn't stop the water and it flooded my stairwell and we had no access to get in or out.  It was like a scene from Grey Lady Down (imagine submariners drowning in the sub from flooding).  Very FUN! stuff.  This time, for whatever reason, once they build the well, the flooding stopped.  But prior to getting the well capped (which hasn't caused an issue in the past) water was just pouring in.

What gives and how do I address this going forward?

Hmm, try linking it to an emergency lever next time. I've heard of a few problems with pressure plates being quickly turned off and on, as it would be sometimes with fluid mechanics.

I always depressurize water going to a well cistern by using diagonal flow. Better safe than sorry.

Going down z-levels doesn't depressurize...correct?  You have to toss in that diagonal dig right?

Correct! You can actually make some really neat pressurizes setups using a tall reservoir and with tunnels underneath to push water to far-flung regions of your fort. So long as the area leading to the well-pit has diagonal spots to break the pressure, it'll be fine.
