Yeah, not at all worth it just to have wallpapers that are permanently paired, when I value true randomization on things like this.

I spent a little more time in Mint today, and did some reading around about the various desktop environments.  Also got Steam to work, but then understood what everyone says about just running Steam itself in Wine.  Next weekend, I'll probably try a different desktop.
