Too much happiness
« on: February 18, 2016, 10:12:22 pm »

For the first time in a while, stress is manageable and not all my fortresses tend toward stress death. On the contrary, most of my forts have dwarfs tending toward... well, not happiness, but whatever the opposite of stress is. And I don't know about you, but all this happiness and hugging and learning is disgusting. There ought to be consequences for too much "negative stress."

Now, on a related note, it's currently impossible to weave animal hair. This has its advantages, because I can leave auto-loom on but still have thread available to bind books. But, what if wearing horsehair garments were possible, if limited to temple dwellers ("performers"), and moreover it increased stress or tended it toward zero. If a dwarf's happiness rises too high, you can always sentence them to temple duty.

Possible consequences for excessive happiness: special new types of tantrum, laziness, insurrection.

Having second thoughts about "too much happiness," still think hair shirts would be badass.

laziness

Sounds good.

Overseer: "Hey the goblins are coming, pull that lever!!!"
Urist McLaziness: "Yawn, let me sleep in for a while."

eustress
Eustress is the opposite of distress.  Calmness is the opposite of stress of both types (could also think of it as the midpoint between them).  I think the game has Calmness but no real Eustress, but I'm not intimately familiar with the new emotion system at that level.

Eustress would be an "exercise high" or similar, and should not lead to laziness... but a completely boring "stress-free" existence could.

The concept of eustress/distress is interesting. I'm not sure that calmness, eustress, and distress can be captured all on one axis. I don't see calmness as a "happy medium" between extremes, and I think you can have both kinds of stress at the same time. So we'd have to conceive stress on two axes, or maybe a triangle plot with calmness, eustress, and distress at the poles.

Now, how could we insert this 3-way concept in the game? Bad thoughts would lead to distress and all its consequences, as before. Happy thoughts earned by completing a task or enjoying a meal/drink/mist would lead to calmness. Now, what could happen to a dwarf to increase their eustress? In real life, eustress is caused by being overtasked, excited, or dependent on uncertain factors... What if overtasking or prolonged combat caused a strange mood, martial trance, or... hunting or mating spree?

For animals and semi-intelligent creatures, right?

Right?!
