Sending dwarves to outer space!

I was thinking, has anyone tryed to make a dwarf go beyond 1000+ Z? this would be a awesome science experiment C: what do you guys think? and also, how would we get the dwarf there in the first place? lets !!SCIENCE!! Folks!

Sorry, but there's already a thread on this. Conclusive results show that without DFHackery (and I mean very hacky lag-inducing stuff), you cannot throw something more than a few z-levels above the ground*. However, it led to a minecart science effort that had such wide implications as "allowing hackers and micromanagers to understand the exact workings of minecarts" to "figuring out minecart shotguns" to "a cooler way to kill goblins in cages".

*Where "ground" means "the highest thing that was at this point when worldgen ended or perhaps when this fortress started". I know that with the multi-tile trees, this went much higher than in DF2012.

Yep: Minecarts + Impulse Ramps = Goblin Space Program

No one knows how to launch vertically upward, only at a roughly 45 degree angle, and at maximum velocity, that gets you 20-30 (highly entertaining) z-levels of flight. I recently tested this in 42.04.
