Tetrahedrite, Silver?
« on: February 02, 2016, 10:13:41 pm »

So this might be a little random. But so I was stuck sitting at work for a couple hours with not much to do. Whipped out a little pocket engineering reference book. (No cell service, and gameboy not allowed for slow times. usually I draw, but no paper, so read dis thing)

And I flipped to the mineral composition section for the lulz. Looked at tetrahedrite
(Cu,Fe)12 Sb4 S13. Or (copper, iron)12 (antimony)2 (sulfur)13

Just wondering why in game its a silver bearing ore? Honestly it should be an iron source.

Closer to ingame tetra- would be perhaps, Pearceite (Au,Cu)16 (As)2 (S)11

Oh well, not like I'm demanding changes or anything, just curious why tetra was chosen?

"Uses: ore of copper and as a minor ore of silver."

It has impurities of silver, I believe.

It's treated as a copper ore in real life, as it is in-game. It just has a bit of silver in it.

At least his moaning and chain rattling will be in key and hopefully entertaining.

Wikipedia mentions that it sometimes contains silver:
Quote
Other elements also substitute in the structure, most notably iron and zinc, along with less common silver, mercury and lead.
So it being a copper/iron ore would be more accurate, but silver isn't inaccurate.
Another source says:
Quote
Some iron, zinc and/or silver always substitute for the copper in [Tetrahedrite] up to approximately 15%.
Which seems to agree that silver can be found in it.

There are also other related minerals with more silver, e.g. Freibergite, but that probably has too much silver.
