Change key for toggling burrow workshop restrictions
« on: January 22, 2016, 04:08:32 pm »

Currently toggling burrow workshop restrictions uses the 'w' key, the exact same key as is used to enter the burrow menu. Pressing 'w' twice will accidentally enable workshop restrictions, which tends to cause player confusion. Simply moving the workshop restrictions toggle to a different key (or making it a capital 'W') would significantly reduce the possibility of accidental activation.

Keybinds are customizable if you're having any problem.

Yeah, but do newbies usually use keybindings? Do they even know keybindings exist? Can they trudge through the giant list of keybindings?

If they don't know about keybindings (right on the ESC menu), there's probably a whole lot more they're missing. LNP has sets of custom keybinds if DIY is too cumbersome.

If someone comes up with a good list of changes that works for everyone, maybe Toady could implement it, but keep in mind keyboards can be vastly different.

Some of the changes I use:
  • Shift+<Key> wherever an action does more of something (e.g., Shift++ in place of * for list navigation.)
  • Repeat Slow in many places (wait, resize building, # bins/barrels, military supplies, etc.) Replace any Repeat Fast with Repeat Slow.
  • Swap K and L in adv mode to better match fort mode.
  • Remove Alt from attack confirmation because it's annoying/difficult. Make attack not require shift (rebind announcements to n.)
  • Change Z-up/down to something that doesn't require shift (Page Up/Down personally, but it requires quite a few rebinds. Home/End works.)
  • Trade seize from s to S (less accidents.)
There are also a whole lot of workshop orders that could use bindings.

The problem isn't that I hit the key, it's that other players tend to accidentally enable "workshop restrictions" and experience completely unintuitive behavior because of it. Anyone who's taken the time to rebind the option would probably be able to diagnose the symptoms (since they know the option exists); but it's certainly not a friendly default key for players who aren't familiar with "workshop restrictions". If I could rebind all those players' keys I'd do it, but the closest I can manage is suggesting it in this forum.
