Howdy,

new player here. Using latest Starter Pack

From the enhanced view of stocks in the status screen I select something (eg a bunch of plump helmets) and hit SHIFT-Z to zoom to the item but it doesn't.  It appears to work for DAS in his tutorial?  Any ideas as to why it doesn't go to item location as this would be incredibly helpful to find where things are going?

Yeah I have been having this same problem.... I think compounded on that it throws me back out to the "z" screen.  really annoying, I think but don't quote me on this that if you hit "tab" or whatever the expand items is and then try "z" zoom too, it should work.  I also think you should post this in the bug tracker, not here.

The shift-z has never worked for me, so I've given up on it. Just tried the tab first trick, and it did indeed work. Thanks for the tip!

If you're going to post a bug report, it should be for DFHack, not DF, since the enhanced screen isn't a part of DF itself.

I think it's perfectly valid to ask here if you've understood a feature correctly, rather than spamming bug trackers with misunderstandings.

Oh, and by the way, please state version rather than "latest". While testing the tab trick I found a newer version of LNP (r17) has been released since my last DF session, leading to the question of whether you're using r16 or r17.

unfortunately cant turn on game at moment.  Not sure what the TAB trick is?  Do you mean go to status (z) then the (e)nhanced view of the 'stocks' menu then search then hit TAB then hit SHIFT-Z?  If so then I am not sure it works for me?

Indeed it is DF hack and its version r17 of the starter pack for me also.

My first attempt with tab was just a random body part at the top of the list, without searching, and that worked. I've just made a new attempt with selection of a steel item, tab, and then shift-z, which kicked me back out, as usual. A third attempt where I selected a steel item and then tabbed thrice worked. More testing gives inconclusive results: sometimes I'm kicked back out, and sometimes it works. It could be related to where the item is. I've been taken to a stockpile with stuff, and I've been taken to a dorf wearing the item.

Conclusion: It sometimes works, probably governed by rules I haven't discovered.

Note that I'm still on r16, since I haven't bothered upgrading for this quick experiment.

And yes, it's z-stocks-e-[search]-<tab>-Z.

Pretty sure tab works if and when it gets you to an individual item.

Wonder if the getting booted out of the screen behaviour is LNP induced because I don't get that, when shift-z fails to zoom for me literally nothing happens.

I have pretty much always used LNP because I am still a newb and really need the extra features, including the easy access to mayday textures and such... I have a beast machine but still like the easy config to set my dwarves to 30-40 or so cause I can't/don't need more to keep track of.

anyways, I never had problems with z/shift-z till r16/and again in r17, and in my opinion it has something to do with "expanding" menus to individual items instead of grouped ones, and then zooming too them.  unclear how to explain it but frequently I think I am on an individual item and yet it is a "collective" item/items.

Still I think it is a bug/possibly a bug before which has been fixed and has weird results/undesired ones.

NOT A BUG. You might see this:

plump helmets [203]
pig tails [34]
sweet pods [60]

If you select pig tails and press "z" or "Z" (can't remember which), nothing will happen. This is intended behavior.

Explanation: There are many "stacks" of pig tails, each looking like

pig tails [3]
pig tail
pig tails [2]
pig tail
pig tails [2]

Those are all lumped together normally in the stocks screen, as well as all the (for instance) steel helmets, which will normally look like

steel helmets [42]

But if you press [Tab], it will look like

-steel helmet-
+steel helmet+
steel helmet
*steel helmet*

One for each steel helmet.

If you press Z on the "lumped-together" screen, it will not zoom. 'Why?' you might ask. Well, because which "stack" should it zoom to? One of the dozens in the stockpile, the one in the fields, the one being hauled, the one being processed?

But if you press Z on the "expanded" screen, it knows which stack you mean, and zooms to that specific stack.

I agree with the explanation of the intended behavior, but in the sort list, you're kicked out even if there is a single item. The kicking out is certainly not intended, even if you can argue that the single item is a group of 1 and stacks aren't zoomed to. Also, it doesn't seem to consistently zoom to items even when single items are selected from the [tab] single stack list, which, again, presumably is not an intended behavior.

The "pig tail" is actually a "group", not a "stack", of one. It seems incredibly pointless for Toady to code in the ability to zoom from the unexpanded view if there is only one stack when all you must do is press tab.

And I hear what you are saying and completely understand it Jwood but after quite some time experimenting I still am seeing the problem repeatedly.  I hit "tab" and ensure I am on a single item(not collective) and it still kicks me out.  Just trying to figure out now if it is particular items or random.
