How to get dwarf to drop stone during alert?

One of my dwarves was hauling stone to an outside build job when a vile force of darkness arrived.
I set up an alert for civilians to run inside but this guy insists on carrying this stone at a snail pace.
I cancelled the build job in the job queue but he still hangs onto that rock.

How to get him to drop the stone?

Edit: Ok, I think the problem is that I set the civilian alert before the job was cancelled.

wow I am obviously a newb who trolls the boards cause I love dwarf fortress!!!!  Never even thought of this conundrum and thanks for the tip, I will remember and try if I ever get in this situation.

I am gonna respond and say I am not seeing this in the bug tracker!!!  I think you may have found a new bug!

Well, both civilian alerts and ordinary burrows are unable to handle hauling in progress while the alert is activated. For a civilian alert, you have to cancel the job prior to activating the alert (or deactivate the alert, cancel the job, and the reactivating the alert), or the dorfs will try to save the precious boulders.
If you add a dwarf to an ordinary burrow while it's hauling something to a location outside of the burrows you're spammed with job cancellations until you give up, since the bugger won't drop the item, nor give up on the job. It might be possible to cancel the job, though.

Doesn't work. I've designated an item as forbidden and/or to be dumped, the dwarf will still lug it around. You have to cancel the job either before or during the alert (not sure if it works during an alert yet)

Cancelling during a civilian alert didn't work the last time I tried. Haven't tried with a personal (dwarfonal?) burrow, though.

Cancel the job before making the alert. It's the only way IIRC.
