The Nullpoint: Sci fi survival horror rpg
« on: October 16, 2015, 02:00:45 pm »

Basically, you fly around a superstructure in a spaceship and do raids for goodies. Monsters and horrors abound

It looks like it might be interesting. The dev team includes some veteran people. And I like the sci-fi-eldritch-horror concept.

Still... there is something that irks me somewhat of this thing. Maybe I'm a bit burned with the previous "sci fi survival horror" game I bought (Breach and Clear Dead State), maybe it's something else...

Anyhow, I'd like to hear the community's thoughts on this...

$20 seems high for a minimum pledge amount to get the game, considering the risks with any kickstarter that it doesn't complete or that the game doesn't end up being fun to play.

*shrug* the price is not too crazy... if it does deliver.

TBH it seems this KS is going to fall dead on water anyway, so...

Tried the tech demo and it seems altogether too much like Dead State, as I feared :(

Naw. An xcomesque combat system would have been an improvement, TBH

It doesn't seem too high if the people behind it are known for completing good KS before this, and/or are a group of people that have been working together for a good while.
My specific reference points for this are Larian Studio's D:OS and Harebrained Studio in general.
Larian's had a lot of previously successful titles, and Harebrained had the very successful Shadowrun KS.

But I only say this because Chair said they're veteran devs. I haven't done any actual research (yet).
The concept is, interesting, but not enough to accept the price point or believe the funding goal is all that reasonable.
Particularly since they already have a prototype.

I withdrew after I checked the prototype. I've become more skeptical in the game. In fact, I posted here because I was having serious doubts... which I'm sorry to say have become stronger. The concept itself is not bad, but eeh. I think the planned implementation is not promising, as it is.

All I know about the team is what they stated at the pledge... they said they were experienced. Upon further checking, however, the exact wording is somewhat ambiguous:

Quote
The Nullpoint team is bolstered by the circle of support here at Schell Games, including developers like Marc Tattersall (Diablo II), Michael Giam (Twisted Metal), Tim Sweeney (City of Heroes), Harley Baldwin White-Wiedow (Tomb Raider: Underworld), Matt Mahon (Dungeon Siege II), and Jesse Schell (Art of Game Design).

EG: rather than the actual team members, they're members of their parent company.

In fact, it's not even too clear they're bona fide members of that parent company:
Quote
Schell Games has agreed to cover two thirds of our development costs. That’s enough for us to cover basic functionality like saving and loading, survivor persistence, AI, menus, and all the other things few people initially think about when imagining game development. After further discussion, we determined we’d need more than that to really make a game worth playing.

PD: The stretch goals are odd as well. "Leveling up" as a stretch goal? cmon.
