Hydra TLC
« on: September 17, 2015, 05:17:15 pm »

After much-welcome help building the Toroid Cyclotron Cannon (digging channels is hard), I got to fire it against an invading Hydra.

Now its stuck in the 'blast processor' pit with a few bruises and a broken leg. It proceeded to tear apart all four goblin siegers I had tossed in there.... and forgot about because one of my dorfs made a thong with a picture of a thong on it in a wacky mood.

The place is a bit of a gore-splattered mess; how does the healing mechanism work? Should I worry about infection? Should I pit some prisoners from the Tower of Judgement to feed the beast? Does that 'heal faster'? Do Hydras die of starvation?

Whoa, a lot of questions.  I'll divide them:

1. How does the healing mechanism work?

I'm not quite sure, but things tend to heal from broken skin and such over time, leaving a scar.  Broken bones may or may not heal, I don't know, as I haven't had many injuries this version.  There's nothing you can do to speed it up; even if it was tamed, animal caretakers are bugged completely broken.  I'm not sure they ever worked.

2. Should I worry about infection?

Don't.  Even if it does occur in non-dwarves, there's nothing you can do about it.  Infections aren't a sure-death thing these versions, anyway.

3. Should I pit some prisoners from the Tower of Judgement to feed the beast?

Hehehe...  Do keep in mind the prisoners may further injure the beast; stripping them of equipment (by using (d)esignate, (b)ulk, (d)ump on their cages, then unmarking the cage itself) will probably be safer.  Otherwise, up to you.  Hehehe...

4. Does that [make the hydra] "heal faster"?

No.

5. Do hydras die of starvation?

Nothing that is not part of your group (i.e., dwarves, livestock) will never starve, go to sleep, drink, etc.  This means invaders, wild beasts, traders, and diplomats don't need to worry about those things.  Lucky...

Also, what's the "Toroid Cyclotron Cannon"?

No worries, all prisoners are strip-searched before their stay in the Tower. Some get 'pit' softening, too. A few broken bones here and there just to make them safe for new recruits looking for hammer/axe practice.

The Toroid Cyclotron Cannon is basically a "railgun" powered by several dwarven water reactors. Fires silver minecarts down a 'cyclical' chamber, making their speed high, and the 'barrel' is part of the danger hallway - a 'super weapon' designed to mow down large sieging forces. Most enemies dodge... and fall into that 8 layer-deep pit floored with platinum bars, aka "The Blast Processor". The lever on the left opens the left bridge, which leads RIGHT BACK TO THE BARREL. By the time the battered invaders climb up, the dorfs will have loaded another slug into the gun's firing chamber. Next time a big one comes, I'll try loading the "slug" with dense rocks/ore.
