Access to dead dwarf corpse
« on: September 09, 2015, 09:23:47 am »

I had a miner have an unfortunate accident while channeling out a space for a well.  This resulted in his plummeting downward and discovering he could not fly.  The 7/7 underground water did not cushion his fall and he had gone on to Valhalla.

I'm attempting to gain access to his corpse for burial.  I've dug a stairwell down to the level above the water and then breached the wall 1 z-level above the wall and in that breach point, I've dug a downward staircase.  That stairwell has flooded naturally.  The corpse is four squares away from the stairwell.  It's not appearing as though anyone can/will retrieve him.  I have made a coffin, placed it and designated/assigned it to the corpse.

I've attempted to build walls or floors to no avail.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

The only way to get the corpse out is to lower the water level all the way to the corpse, as the corpse hauler has to stand in the corpse's tile to pick it up. I think 3/7 is sufficient, but if waves cause ripples up to 4/7 you'll probably get retrieval cancellation spam.
Fighting with one (or better, several) screw pump(s) could work, but the pumpers will probably be swept down into the water unless the output is contained. I haven't been too successful with open water screw pump usage, though...

^This, or just memorialise the wannabe-flying miner and let his corpse where it is.

If the water is a cavern lake: Does said water reach the map's edge?

If the water is NOT a cavern lake:

Hope you like my answers!

EDIT: Made some changes, added an idea, not necessarily "master player" to be able to do a Mosus Moses.

I don't consider myself a master player, but sealing a cavern lake that's a single level deep isn't too hard, although it can be time consuming. Multiple tiles deep is harder. My two main methods are magma and cave-ins, where the latter can have disastrous effects if the lake floor is the roof of something (e.g. the next cavern down, another part of the same cavern, or the magma sea). Cave-ins may not be possible if there is no room for the digging required because caverns are too close together.
Magma can be delivered either via a pump stack or a carried magma proof mine cart (steel, iron, or candy. NOT nether-cap, as it will be destroyed).

I did get the impression the well was in an aquifer, however, and that requires a fair bit of work.
- Puncture the well from below and drain it. That should allow you to get the body swept down. You'd then close the puncture with e.g. a drawbridge when the body has been swept down. Actually, you should be able to use that method with a lake as well (unless it's directly on top of the magma sea).
- Seal the well off using the double-slit method (modified for the circumstances), the cave-in method, or magma and then pump the water out.

Ah.  I did not think of either sealing off the lake as a whole or the potentiality of the well being an aquifer well, nor did I think of sweeping the corpse away with pumps.
