they're cheesemakers, what other use did they have?
making...
...cheese?
don't hate me
That's not useful!

*heavy breathing*

I could have sworn that markdsdwarves could have done the trick. Otherwise, you can try packing boulder traps in a corridor, that will collapse the beast.

Marksdwarves should work, the problem being if they can't get in range long enough to hit it. Not usually having shields, makes them vulnerable. And no amount of fireproof clothing (modded or not) will help. Armor may help, I didn't test that (I tested a constant temperature cloth which came from modded magma crabs, specifically for an elite force of marksdwarves to make them withstand fire attacks. Fire attacks go right through clothes. Maybe making them something like leather or chainmail would help...)

Generally, anything that hits it should kill it. A minecart shotgun full of anything would do, socks, fluffy wamblers, adamantine strands, pellets of modded aero-gel. It supposedly works something like this:
Physics: "Fire in the physical form of a body?... "
*Distraction*
Physics: "Hey, a squirrel!"
...
*Collision*
Physics: "Fire can't be a solid..."
*Explosion*

Ranged or a stray kitten should do it.

Do Not. DO NOT use your melee unit. They will one shot it, but as soon as it dies, it will explode killing all of them.

Just recruit some cheesemakers, give them some crappy weapons and a shield, and station them near it, it will die. They might die too, either by not blocking or the resulting explosion, but they're cheesemakers, what other use did they have?

Trust me even if you did a story about the coming of age of a young, idealistic, stars-in-her-eyes fish dissector, I will still name my fish dissector migrants "Useless Migrant"

Because that's what they are.

Cheese maker isn't the worse profession ever, though.

That would be cheese dissector, of course. They provide an in-depth critique of your cheeses.

I had a giant turkey made of fire once. Two bolts from a marksdwarf where enough to finish it. However, its implicit fireball attack killed the markdwarf in question:

She died shortly after, but in a truly dwarvenly way. Scalded in dwarven beer.

Sometimes a forgotten beast can be used for crafty things. Pitting the tough ones against goblins kills two birds with one bolt as it were.

I embarked in an arid mountainous region on my latest fort. No Trees, lots of grass and exposed clay/sand. I had my hill fort built, a shaft to the 40's-ish layer, a well shaft dug and got about 20 fungal trees out before a stone forgotten beast showed up. It's been terrorizing all the fauna in the 1st cavern layer so I've had that locked off until I can get things sorted out topside. I've rigged a path from the mine shaft that will let me route the forgotten beast out to entertain the second or third goblin siege that happens. I'm still at ~50 dwarf population...

*The sword is sharp, the spear is long, The arrow swift, the Gate is strong; The heart is bold that looks on gold; The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong.
*The dwarves of yore made mighty spells, While hammers fells like ringing bells In places deep, where dark things sleep, In hollow halls beneath the fells.

Could be worse, my first forgotten beast was a slug made out of some sort of gem (i can't remember which). It was nearly indestructible, had no internal organs and breathed a gas that's effect didn't become apparent until after the creature was dead and the residue left by the gas began to get tracked around the entire fort and caused the feet of my dwarves to rot away.

My hastily recruited doctors got real good at surgery from cutting off rotten tissue, i can tell you that much.

Fair enough. Still useless (even if marginally more useful than others).
