I agree. While kid of silly, it would be incredibly annoying having to calculate support distances and whatever.

I still put supports in, because it looks cool, and just in case the 7x7 cavein comes back.

I think the plan is to have an amazingly cool realistic cave-in calculation in the future... like, sand will readily cave in but solid stone will support large open caverns.
