Fixing Cave-Ins
« on: October 13, 2006, 08:52:00 am »

So this forum has been really awesome in answering my questions (thanks guys!) so I just have another question. Is there a way to fix a cave-in, ie, once it's caved in, how do I clear away everything? I tried to [d]ig it all back out, but I couldn't designate all of the debris to be mined out.

Well, for one, a cave in happens when you have a 7x7 section with no supports, so digging it all out again is a bad idea without putting in more supports. Try resuming and letting game time run for a little bit, some of the "debris" are just dust clouds that settle out after a minute, all the terrain it drops should be mineable.

When the cave river or magma river floods when you hit it, it generates a danger level which prohibits mining in the area. The same thing may occur when a cave in happens. Give it a minute (the tiles which were turned into debris piles will support the ceiling) and then attempt to designate the debris area for mining.

As stated above, build a support somewhere within the 7x7 area to stop further cave-ins.

I've been leaving unmined columns scattered around my rooms for support.  I didn't know you could actually build support columns until recently.

Is an unmined column just as supportive as a purpose-built support?

Why'd you reply in a thread from 2006? This isn't even relevant anymore - 7x7 rooms do not collapse in the 3d versions of DF.

But to answer your question, yes, unmined columns are just as supportive as supports - in fact, they're better, because tantruming dwarves can knock down supports (but not unmined columns).

On the other hand, support columns can be linked to levers to create cave-ins. Useful for when an army invades, or nobles arrive.  :)

Heh, great, I've even been smoothing the stone, which makes it look like a column.  (Although some walls such as red sand won't smooth.)

Sorry for exhuming the thread.  I used the search.  It was the first thread up.

A quick question, not sure if anyone will be able to answer it: Will the 7x7 room thing ever be put back in?

And one I'm sure someone will b able to answer: Does the room have to be 7x7 or larger? If I make a 6x50 room, will it collapse? Can the room just be no bigger than 49 (7 times 7) units?

If the cave-in code goes back in, I know a lot of 3D fortresses will suddenly collapse.

No, it's not a matter of 49 units.  In the old version, it was specifically an unsupported area of 7x7 or more.  I mean, a long hallway could easily be more than 1x49, right?

yeah. 6xinfinity wouldn't collapse.

There's some useful diagrams in the old wiki, if someone wants to take a look.

Thanks to you and quentin stone for the answers.

I was hoping that, because I have lots of hallways and 6x12 rooms for workshops and stuff.

Two words: Arena Football

It's more fun without the support columns in the middle of the field.

I'll keep building the supports, just to stay in practice.  It seems silly to be able to build gigantic underground vaults without supports and not have to worry about cave-ins.

These are dwarves we're talking about, though. They can mine anything they want to, as they're magic. Duh.

Speaking of cave-ins, how do I mine a butte full of bauxite?  Is a "ladder column" considered self-supporting?

god i hope not

i build supports, but 7x7 is really tiny and restrictive. not to mention it takes away from impressive features such as subterranean pools.
