Make some obsidian up there in the canopy and get it wet.  Then try to grow a tree in a tree.

Isn't there a problem with old trees? At least some of them seem to fall over after a couple of years.

Okay, the fort has been fun so far but mostly uneventful.  I was nearing the end of winter when there was an accident as i had dwarves remove some flooring.  Cue cave in and unconscious dwarves.  Mostly just bruises.  Later at the end of winter, had a fey blacksmith who produced an iron artifact anvil. Cool, so I have just recently got to mid-spring of the second year.  Sadly though some of my attempts to build have cause some trees to deconstruct so   :-[.  It seems though trees will spring up right next to constructions already there, not remove anything and perhaps gives me an idea to do this treefort.  Mostly right now the fort is kinda treeless but that will change.  Look in the spoiler to see the current state of the fort.  Its not looking like i hope but i am pleased.

Yeah, trees are frustratingly persistent about where they want to grow.

I had a neat chunk of map that had trees which I just didn't care for, so I finally said screw it and used dfhack to turn the whole top layer into adamantine, smoothed it all, went back to working on the waterfall cascades down the "wings" towards the river at the bottom of the cliff... and pow, collapse messages pop up, trees kept regrowing in the adamantine, so I went and manually dropped the top layer with a controlled cave-in... trees kept popping up in mid-air >.>, so yeah, if a tree wants to grow right through the middle of your fort, it's gonna grow right through the middle of your fort.

Nice to see people using default tile set, like me :)
This is awesome. I am looking forward to seeing how you fare when the enemies come knocking. Death from above!
Is the trade depot built on tree, or built on a raised platform? Do they still have to go down to ground level to pick fruit from the tree using stepladders?

The fort currently is not supported by trees, which was my not original intent but I not too worried as i have noticed trees trying to grow around the fort which like I gives me an idea of how to make this appear as an actual tree-fort again if I have patience.  So far no invaders, that might change as the year progresses.  Will need to think about a military soon.

Currently just supported by log platforms.  And far as fruit picking...seems still tied to being done on ground level. hmmmm....
