Where's all the woodland critters?
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:38:00 pm »

I am nearly a year and a half into this game and I have yet to see a single wild creature.  Any ideas what happened?  I was looking forward to hunting and trapping...

It's a bug. Most swamps and marshes don't have any animals.

I thought I was in a temperate forest...  I just remembered that I tried to add a new critter shortly after starting this fortress, would that mess it up?

Also, how can I check the type of area I'm in after I've already started the forest?

Some areas, particularly evil areas, don't have any animals.  I'm not sure whether it's a bug or not, but I think it adds a bit of "Weird" to the game.  In a good way - If the area is so evil, it makes sense that no animals would congregate there.

I've had several temperate areas without any creatures before.  It's quite frustrating.  Luckily, my current fortress has elephants.

It's possible to run a fortress successfully with an Elephant economy, you know.

I actually quite like elephants, they make the zoo viable and leave a lot of nice useful stuff when they pass from the mortal coil, if you know what i mean.

Elephants are good to cough train peasents in the art of wrestling.

Hi!

I haven't had that much experience with elephants yet myself, but won't they get in trouble with the caravan guards? I mean, that is the main grievance I have about unicorns, they slaughter half of my dwarven caravan and then ambush any dwarves who want to give the poor victims a burial or retrieve their items.
