Randomly collapsing caverns?
« on: July 12, 2014, 11:07:36 pm »

I know 40.02 has lots of weird bugs, but I may have found another. In my newest fort, I keep getting messages "A section of cavern has collapsed!" and it zooms dozens of Z-levels below the fort I am making. I haven't even reached the first cavern yet but it is telling me this is going on way below me, enough to be the second or third cavern layer. I never heard about this before it started happening today, but has anyone else experienced this?

Had that in my first 0.40 fort, but not in any of the four or five forts since.

When you embark, assuming you don't have collapses disabled, anything that isn't firmly secured is going to collapse.  Every now and then there is something that is not supported due to how world generation does things.  This isn't a bug and has been around for at least as long as I've played DF (since 0.31.01).

I one time embarked on a site where the aquifer was low enough that it opened up out of a cavern wall in the first cavern, which was cool, really awesome and scenic and dwarf-like.

About two week into that embark, the water started pouring out into the underground magma pool nearby.  Cue "A section of the cavern has collapsed! x345,049," FPS dropping to single digit INSTANTLY, all sorts of crazy amounts of magma mist and water mist and shite pouring out of the breach.  I'm sure if you were a dwarf in real life watching this you'd be in awe.

It's less impressive when it only move once or twice every few seconds.

Perhaps youve got something fun like that going on? :p

Yeah Water flowing into a Magma ocean causes collapse lag untill the magma is plugged...
Magma flowing into an ocean is worse.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I remember this happening way back in 0.31.25.  Strangely, it seems to happen aboveground too ("something has collapsed!").  I'm guessing, it has something to do with the trees.

I got this message when my miners dug out a root tile of a tree. I dont know whether the entire tree went down, the collapse message at least zooms to the surface level.

My guess it that the trees below ground have the same propensity for randomly collapsing as the trees above ground.

Just because it's been happening since 0.31 doesn't make it not-a-bug.

True, but structures of unsupported rock that form in world gen due to how the caves are generated aren't really a bug.  As far as I'm aware, all of the collapses are either structures of this sort, or a water and magma interaction (which also causes lots of lag as it calculates temperature changes as the two mix).
