So let us know if you find out how to add z levels, I just ran into this same issue yesterday and set Z Levels to 2.

That worked, I have more iron in the first 6 zlayers than the entire world I tried last time.

Can you get the worldgen seeds, regenerate the world with a normal number of z-levels above ground, and find the site again to see how much iron there is?
