Dwarf Fortress incorporating HTML links
« on: November 14, 2013, 08:30:44 pm »

Something that occurred to me the other day, that would be an interesting feature, is to have a "ping" feature activated by certain events that would interact with the internet.  I mean, there's so much information readily available on the internet already, why not just ping the appropriate wiki page that describes, say, the DF uses for hematite when (l)ooking at the description for hematite?  The description would be an html address instead that would open that page.  This would work for armors, workshops, weapons, enemies, animals... even Megabeasts and Titans.

Soundsense already uses the gamelog.txt file to activate its sound files, using an automatic forumdwarves.txt reader might be able to integrate html content with our game as well.  Suddenly creature graphics aren't such a big problem anymore, since their descriptions just point to a .jpg or .png file hosted publicly, or downloaded as a "graphics pack" with the utility. (Much like Masterwork Mod's awesome how-to pages included with the mod itself.)

I don't know java or ruby or even html5, so I don't have much of an idea about how tricky it would be to read the html link that would be replacing the description text in the vanilla game, as an "automatic link", but outside that, the only problem I see is the hard disk space (or bandwidth, if it points to an outside media archive) used may be too much for older computers, and replacing all those descriptions with appropriate links would be seriously mind numbing.

What are your thoughts about this idea? Feasable or not?

I like to think that I know how to do stuff when it comes to DF modding, but I wouldnt know how to do this. Worst case, the game minimizes all the time, because the browser suddenly becomes your active window. I guess its possible for a few things, using dfhack, but I dont think this can be done in the way you imagine it would work. But if I'm proven wrong, I wont complain. ;)

Yeah, like killing yourself to open a tomb, or killing yourself to join a group, or killing yourself, just to quicktravel to the morque... or beating people with your own severed arm... seriously, Bob, trim it down. :P
