I wouldn't call it "fragmented little communities", at least not for most of the games. Altough it is true for a few games (like SS13)

Many games, actually.

The thing about Bay12 is that we don't tend to operate as one community in games as large forums like Something Awful or whatnot. Instead we have our own sub-communities of friends that play games together rather than with everyone else from Bay12.

Which was, ironically enough, the whole reason the DFC steam group became popular in the first place.

The bay12 is most definitely just another fragment, though. Most of the bay12 people I play games with certainly aren't members, for example.

Rather, it seems like groups build up around certain types of game - I know if some particular genre gets a popular thread on these forums, it's going to be a lot of the same people I've played with before. But even when the game I end up playing with a group of Bay12ers ends up being played on Steam, it's almost never through the Steam group.

Which from my experience is actually mostly just a TF2/shooter group, and also like it's own little isolated group of folks -  I don't get the feeling I'd have much luck finding a Wesnoth group there, or people for the newest browser based Twinoid game, etc. and so on. Unless I wanted to play a shooter, I'd probably look elsewhere... either in the IRC or posting here.

Well, the DFC group plays a mix of everything as dictated by fofm.

We've had fps, strategy, MMOs, MOBAs, paradox games, etc... It's just that most of us return to certain games time and time again that are easily accessible to everyone like LoL or TF2 because they are free and most people play them, or minecraft and terraria because everyone has them.

Basically, you ask if anyone wants to play something in Teamspeak or the steam chat, and start playing - or you ask someone like me to make an announcement to find others that want to organize a game of whatever.

I agree that if something is cheap people don't respect it as much. If it's free they generally don't respect it at all. I have a bunch of games I got for free that I haven't even really touched, and those are the ones that got past my "am I actually interested in this kind of thing" filter. Heck, I have always said I want more good old Thief and after downloading the Doom3 Thief mod thing I didn't even finish the tutorial. What gives? It's good, from what I've seen, and has more cool stuff in it than Thief 1 / Thief 2.

Torchlight 1 got boring about halfway through. Then again I did play Diablo 1 and 2, so it wasn't that new to me.

Mainly these days I get into an MMO like DDO or PS2 and that's what I log in to. I'll do some Minecraft. Before that it was Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and before that it was Battlefield 1942. I'm always harping on how I want new gameplay experiences but then some game will catch my interest in a repetitive way, which is rare.

I do not post about my gaming usually. I play plenty recently, though. I figure that's just how people are.

Though I am getting a backlog of RPGs I must complete.

I'm....going to strenuously disagree with you there.

Shhhh, don't tell him where we are. :]

I'm replaying Wesnoth currently. There's a whole new 1,000+ mission campaign that spans a bunch of different stories, with an item/crafting system. I re-love Wesnoth now, and hope some features in it get stolen and put into the main branch.

Me, Redwarrior, Haspen, Tiruin, Taricus, BlueJello and some others have been pretty hooked on the World Conquest multiplayer campaign. It's so much fun, but so hard - Me and Red finally made it to the very last level. It's awesome.

That sounds crazy, could we get a link to it?

Legend of the Invincibles [sic], should be in the add-on section.
