Need a way to pass the time at work
« on: August 14, 2013, 11:30:46 am »

I'm usually found in the "Other Games" board, but I decided I'd stop by here for the first time today and see what kind of cool ideas I can get from it. I recently started a job at a call center, I can get anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes of nothing happening between calls and while that seems short, it feels like forever and makes the work day long and sucky.

I'm looking for ideas of things I could do to keep myself busy/mentally stimulated during those repeated short bursts of free time.

I can't use the work computer for personal stuff, and my cellphone has to be off the entire time, no psp or 3ds or any other piece of video games electronics is allowed.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing the cool ideas you guys/girls come up with.

Well, what kind of things do you enjoy doing in your off-time?

I've found that origami's really good for that.

Gotta agree with origami. If you're allowed scissors, of course. Otherwise, I would start an off-time project and do pen-and-paper planning for it during call breaks. It's what I did when waiting on professors in class last year.

Origami requires no scissors or glue.  Just paper.

Otherwise, I would start an off-time project and do pen-and-paper planning for it during call breaks. It's what I did when waiting on professors in class last year.

This one is good, too.

Learn some coin tricks.
Learn to meditate (10 seconds of practice many times a day will get you surprisingly good).
Start a stick figure comic strip.
Get some Su Do Ku books.
Learn a new language - make lists of 10 vocabulary words, study them when you have time. Do your work, then when your next "break" comes up, quick-test yourself by folding the vocab sheet in half to hide one language and see how much you can remember. Then, keep studying. You could probably learn crazy lots of words this way in a job like yours.

How about books, those allowed? Would need some practical way to keep track of where you left off after each interruption of course.

Otherwise like has been said puzzles would be ideal.
