Bad Movies with Good Soundtracks
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:36:51 pm »

Have you ever watched a movie, gone on an emotional rollercoaster ride, enjoyed the entire experience, then looked back on it and realized that the movie was terrible - it was just the music you enjoyed?

I had that experience with Children of Dune. I watched it many times before realizing the movie (or miniseries I guess) was awful (particularly in comparison to the book). But that music!

It's so good that someone took this song and made a video for it using footage from FF7.

So are there other bad films with great soundtracks?

Some would say The Keep (a Return to Castle Wolfenstein-esque movie by Michael Mann about Nazis who unearth an ancient horror in a Romanian castle), but I'm reluctant to do so because I actually really liked the movie. They had a fantastic soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, though I think some critics had beef with the film. It's an acquired taste.

I listen to that music every time I breach the HFS. Anyone who's seen the film knows what I'm talking about.

I've read the novel.

The original 1982 Conan the Barbarian has some of my absolute favourite music. Your mileage may vary on the movie itself, it has a cult following, and I actually kinda like it, but many people would consider it a bad movie I guess.

I also like the original Dune theme, while the quality of the movie might be debatable as well.

It's not only the music, but also the visual style that made it a cult classic, but neither can obsure the fact of it being a supremely silly terminator knock-off.

I consider this one a bad film, despite great acting(Finneas, Moore, Rea), cinematography and the lot. It's just that the story introduced deus ex machina as its main plot driver, defusing the drama built up by all the otherwise good work. And frankly, if not for the music(Michael Nyman, great as always) I wouldn't care for it whatsoever.

Think about it: Luc Besson, Jet Li, Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins. How in the world can anybody fuck that up? This will remain one of the unresolved mysteries of the universe, although I'd wager letting Besson write the script instead of putting him behind the camera was partially to blame.
The film is dumb and puerile, even as it looks great. It feels like it's trying to provide background to the soundtrack, like some oversized music video. I mean, it's Massive Attack, it doesn't need any background to be fantastic.

Man, I love the film with all my nostalgia, but it's easy to see how it can be considered an opera with an adventure romp tacked on.

I think Conan the Barbarian was a fine movie. Even subtle, at times.

I don't see how it would be a bad movie. Certainly it doesn't have the over dramatic gloss current movies slather on their movies... but everything it tries to be it succeeds at.

Mind you the person only thought some people would see it as a bad movie.

It is worth watching The Keep just for that single scene with the silver crosses.

Well, I personally think Star Wars III was alright, but I know everyone hates it, so ...

I was actually just listening to the Dune soundtrack. It really is awesome work. Though amusingly the bit that everyone remembers with the angelic choir is only played for about half a minutes in the whole and the soundtrack doesn't have the awesome guitar riffs.

Thinking back on it, a great deal of b-movie cheeseballs have pretty awesome music, or maybe they're just fresh compared to the usual "EPIC" music you find in blockbusters. I think one example would be Terminator. It's a good movie, but it does owe a lot to that electric/techno theme.

Spawn, terrible movie, but the soundtrack has spent more than a decade in my 6 disc shuffle.

I loved the comics. The game on the dreamcast was fantastic too.

On a very related note, superfly is one of the very few films to have been outgrossed by its soundtrack.

I'm quite a fan of Curtis Mayfield. To be honest, you'd have to add Shaft to that mix, as much as I enjoy some blaxploitation every now and then.
