Saw it as the top currently-played game on Reddit's /r/gaming and researched it, then taught myself to play it 11 months ago. And I've not looked back since!

Most people who meet with DF for the first time usually don't know anything about utilities like Dwarf Therapist and tilesets, let alone the newb pack. I gave up learning DF and started learning it again after I discovered the newbie pack myself.

I wish there was some information about all the utilities and tilesets on the download page or something. It would make people... less scared to give DF a go.

Last time Toady official endorsed something fan-made, he ended up endorsing a site hosting various kinds of Japanese porn :P iirc.

I believe I discovered Df from a PC gamer magazine, i didn't understand anything in it for a while though, that was back when it was 2D.

I think it took me reading boatmurdered to actually try to understand what was going on.

I used to hear of it sporadically when browsing Minecraft-related stuff.
One day I said to myself "f*ck it" and gave it a go.

Found a reference of DF on one of imageboards. It seemed like a very interesting game, so I decided to try it. At first, I got too frustrated because I didn't understand what's happening, and in-game help didn't help much, so I abandoned that.

But then I read Boatmurdered story and other stories and my interest sparked again. And when I learnt how to dig and designate and read entire wiki, everything went smooth and fine.

Usenet. Though I also saw some references on tvtropes (which I don't read regularly). But thanks to Usenet I already know about things like Dwarf Therapist before I started, and some basic strategies.

Funny thing is that DF itself was which lead me to learn about and then play another games, like Terraria, A Game of Dwarves and then Minecraft.

I found out about it from a friend.  I still remember my first mistake.  I had figured out designations and had dug out some simple fortresses, only to quit because I didn't know you could enable skills.

I don't remember where exactly it all started.  I have seen references to Boatmurdered and shenanigans that go around, like magma and the likes... I have no clue where.

I tried it a few times over the course of a few years, never got far, even using wiki as the reference.  Eventually migrated to the southern boards.
The game finally clicked for me around the mid/late-era of 31.25.  I still suck at many of its parts, but can keep my dwarves alive for an extended period of time.

After spending some time on the Cortex Command Fan Forums, I found several references to DF and then Boatmurdered. I then taught myself to play the game, with only the wiki (which was a huge help) and the failures of Boatmurdered to guide me.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

I cannot believe that I'm the first to post that I found DF from this obscure web site: Six months later (I did nothing else for 6 months) I gave up trying to punch a 4x4 hole through the SMR.

Now I can't play a site for more than a few days before I lose interest.

On the GameFAQs Poll Of The Day message board there once was a topic about hardcore games. There was one reply about DF being the most hardcore of hardcore games with a few people agreeing to that. I was interested and decided to check it out. I was not disappointed.
