If i may suggest something crazy, why not pick the leader of the order, and let him pick the recruits, according to his skills.
After all, why did you hire this guy if you are gonna do his work for him?

Skimming the previous postings only, but I rather like this idea-- it really gives a top-down feel. You pick the people in charge, and, well, you better did a good job picking them, because they're going to be the ones who pick everything else. The personality/habits/traits of the people you pick can be what drives their specialties, a la "The skills of the order are based on the leader's research." You choose them, and they do their own research... hopefully, in a field that's actually relevant to what you want.

That seems interesting to some degree. I guess a leader with high crafting would make a crafty guild and one with high research would have better spells and so forth. It might be interesting to try and not super hard to program.

The example I actually had in mind was something like, a pyromancer leader could be a coward and would therefore have a much higher chance of developing a spell for smokescreens or firewalls, as opposed to lobbing magma bolts.

Only 8 minutes to respond to one of my crazy vague design threads? What kind of place is this? Takes hours at most places and its all posts saying how vague I am and how no one can answer a question with that little info.

Welcome to bay12 forums, my favored place to read great discussions regarding gaming.

Back on topic though.

... Darn I don't really have much to say that hasn't been said already... uh, make sure there are filters if you go for full player control? Like filter the distance of the citizen to be recruited, filter minimum stats needed for certain classes?

That said, are you interested in making a topic of this game itself? It sounds like it could be really fun to discuss.

I've always been under the impression that talking about your own project in general terms is kinda rude. That may be a forum culture thing on some forums though.

I can post more about my work if it interests people though.

There are a few game threads here in Other Games that more or less work as a soapbox for the developer to gather interest and whatnot. I'm specifically thinking about Ultima Ratio Regum and X@COM right now. Then there's Creative Projects board between Other Games and General Discussion with loads of personal projects, some of them videogames.

I'd say creative projects probably for your own game, no one can really complain then. And from the little I've read this sounds interesting.

And there's chaos when push comes to shove, but it's music to my ears.

Eh, I'm not really sure how to start a general thread. The game is pretty complicated and there is a lot of stuff that is hard to explain. The only general thread I have going right now is the update thread on the Glest forums from when I started.
