Ooh i forgot even the best VN ever, CLANNAD.

Seconded. (Related note, the anime was great too imo)

Tsukihime and its pseudo-sequel Kagetsu Tohya are also pretty good.

Lets see.

Kamidori is already mentioned.

Duel Savior has a nice 2d sidescroller fighting system.

Princess Waltz has that weird card combat mechanic.

There's always Sengoku Rance.

Tear's to Tiara is said to be good. I need to try that.

Oh, the Galaxy Angels series.

edit:
If you want something handheld, Corpse Party is on the PSP.

Kamidori Alchemy Meister and Sengoku Rance seem to be too far away from VNs to really be considered one. They follow the same storytelling method, but someone who's looking for something casual/light to read through might hate them.

To the OP, how much nudity do you tolerate? I'm assuming with Katawa Shoujo, you don't mind a little, but many VNs seem to have very very explicit scenes :P

Tear's to Tiara I never got very far into mostly due to the combat system going into realtime as opposed to Utawarerumono which was turn based.  Which for the little bit I played felt kind of unweildly.

Beyond what has been already suggested, I'd suggest Utaware as well.

I'm guessing that you don't mind 'H' showing up in your games otherwise there would have been a specification. Because I'm about to tip my hat just a bit (as if my avatar wasn't enough), so you have been warned.

Beyond what has been listed. On the legit side of things, you can always pick up any one of the following:

Demonbane - GET IT

Koihime Musou - Being an old Dynasty Warriors and RoTK fan, this wrapped itself around my psyche like [insert appropriate euphamism about mollusks, narrated by David Attenborough here]. Hopefully (doubtfully), if enough people end up buying it manga gamer will be able to get the second game translated and released which supposedly is more of a strategy game.

Ef: A fairy tail of the two - Haven't gotten around to playing this one yet, but I loved the series that SHAFT did.

Yume Miru Kusuri - Entertaining and overall pretty good. While the writing is kind of hit and miss with the scenarios, there are only three arcs so it goes pretty quick.

Family Project - I still haven't finished this one completely, and while it dragged on in places it was
okay. Norio Wakamoto played the dad, so it does have that going for it.

Sagara Family - Much more porn, less plot. But of the 'earlier' translated releases it stacks up as one of the higher quality ones with little to no rage enducing content and good art.

Bible Black & Discipline - Not sure if I would reccomend these so much as I'd say they used to be more rites of passage some 12 years ago. Then again I've found that the extreme stuff doesn't resonate well with me anymore, I blame generally becoming less misanthropic over the years.

Divi Dead - Far superior to the two above (IMHO) and in some ways far more tasteful.

There's also Jast's Memorial Collection which I essentially cut my teeth on back when they weren't offered in a bundle, but they do show their age. Also, there is a little game called Kingdom that was pretty fun, about a farm kid going to live in the city & trying to get a girlfriend. It falls more into the galge genre but is worthwhile (PM me if you can't find it and want more details, but a GIS does work). Finally, if for some reason you haven't yet, look up Princess Maker 2. I'm serious, it is mandatory.

I don't mind nudity, but I don't count Sengoku Rance as a VN. Nor do I like it, to be honest. Also note: No handhelds. I don't have anything beyond the GBA and don't have a whole lot of inclination to buy one purely for a VN or two. Not unless it's for like £20 or less.

Yeah Sengoku Rance is more strategy-ish game than a novel.

insani.org has a nice collection of purely visual novels from obscure companies and indie programmers.

Divi Dead - Far superior to the two above (IMHO) and in some ways far more tasteful.
I second YMK, I think it's one of my favorite VNs of all time.  Also, the guy the main character works with is *awesome*.  Too bad he didn't have a path >_>  Everyone has "issues" like in Family Project, but it's way way way better executed.

Family Project ... fell pretty damn flat for me.  I found it way more annoying than interesting.  Didn't care for the main character, and I actively wanted to kill the "dad" repeatedly.  I think the Chinese restaurant owner guy was my favorite character. YMMV.  Great if you like characters that are nine kinds of fucked up and over.

Divi Dead - I recognize the name from years ago, and I *think* I liked it, but I can't recall anymore.  Pretty supernatural based.  I think.

Don't have any real experience with the rest of those.

In addition, I'll throw out:
-Crescendo - Another one of my favorites.  School-based, several paths, "feels".  Been a long time since I ran through it last, so details are fuzzy.  Also, someone sings part of "Scarborough Fair", so how can you go wrong?

-School Days HQ - Currently going through.  Very interesting style, the whole game looks like an animated show (and chapter splits are handled like episode endings/intros - neat).  Only seen 2 or 3 of the 21(!) endings so far.  Emotional roller coaster ahoy!  Also, this one is a bit ... darker than other games.  Can elaborate if there are things you want to avoid.

-Fate Stay/Night - Was pretty good, but I'm not going to gush about it.  Less relationship stuff and more fighting/ohgodIdon'twanttodie.  Third storyline in the game filled my head full of fuck.  Also, there are like ... 50-ish ways to die in this game.  Characters from the game will admonish (and often make fun of) you when this happens.  Almost worth it for that alone.

-Period - Beautiful artwork, fantastic story, characters defined very well.  Has a splash of supernatural/wtf to it, but it's not obtrusive, and more left to wonder about.  However, despite supposedly being based in high school, everyone looks like they're 10.  Also, some rare people being born with wings is a thing in this game.  "Feels" everywhere.

-Ever 17 - Comes highly recommended, but I've yet to get through more than one ending.  No H scenes.  You're trapped in an underwater amusement park.  Don't really remember more than that right now.

-True Love - A pretty old one (90s?  I'm guessing?) but a favorite for its mechanics.  Like Princess Maker where you schedule activities, but you pick what you do each day (3 activities per day).  Study increases intelligence, going to the gym makes you more fit, etc.  Which story you get often depends on your attributes, but also being in the right place at the right time for certain encounters.

-Katawa Shoujo - Already mentioned by OP, but still a favorite.
-don't take it personally... - Ditto

-Snow Sakura (I think.  Pretty sure it starts with Snow, anyway.) - Kind of meh.  Story paths were somewhat endearing, but I think I largely remember being put off by the semi-common "main character's very annoying and perverted best friend".  Also, two of the main characters are pretty obviously based on Sakura and Tomoyo(sp?).  Contains gratuitous amounts of snow.

-On a final note, if you're looking for just straight up "feels" stories, I heartily recommend the mangas "Video Girl Ai" and "Ii's" (I think I got the second one right.  They're both written by the same person, anyway.)

Also, always looking for recommendations that would fit in with my favorites.
