Did they at least poke your abdominal bulge to see what it is? I mean, seriously. A lot of diagnostic information can be obtained by touching your patient, but from what I hear here physical examination isn't very popular with 'murican docs...  ::)
Not figuring out what that bulge is with a CT scan is a bit suspicious too. Also horray for unecessary irradiation, you have 1/620 chance of developing cancer due to it.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

You know, Im quite sure, that, as long as you're in America, a doctor's job is not to make you feel better, but make you keep going back for as many times as they can.
"Oh, I'm not sure what's wrong, take these and come back if it doesn't go away"
*The next week*
"Oh, I'm not sure what's wrong, take some of these instead and come back if it gets worse"
*Dies*

I had something similar happen to a friend of my parents, they kept sending her home and after a few months, she learns she had cancer, and from there, she had a week to live.

It's weird hearing these kind of stories about America, one of the superpowers of the world. Stories about the education system having tests that only accept Christian answers (Who created the Universe? Zeus, God, ..., ... with the kid writing ''No one. The big bang created the universe'' being marked as a mistake), people ending up entirely broke because of an accident and the huge bills that come attached to it and all that kind of stuff. I'd expect stuff like that to happen in some backwater third-world country, not in a western country that's considered to be a superpower.

I mean no offense to Americans but it just strikes me as really strange  :-\

They do this in canada too, and I've never been billed, although they still may be being paid by how many patients they see a day.

Well, in a system where the government makes laws and treats your illnesses, it incentivises them to restrict anything that can conceivably cause a situation that requires them to pay any medical bills. So they are pressured to assess extreme fines and fees and penalties for anything can cause harm at the expense of personal freedom and it's well within their right and prerogative to do so.

I don't get sick or go to hospitals because I take care of my self, so I'd rather have my personal freedom and extra money in my pocket, thanks.

I rarely if ever get sick either and even if I get sick, I usually don't go to the doctor either but an accident is just around the corner. If you got in a car accident (which can happen to anyone, no matter how well you can drive), killing the other and severely crippling you, you're fucked from what I understand.
Child birth in a hospital as well brings a +/-10.000 dollar price tag with it, assuming everything goes as it should. In Europe (or atleast, the Netherlands), it's free. You don't have to worry about being able to pay the hospital bill as there is no bill.

Also, you might take good care of yourself but what about your (future) loved one? Or parents? They never get ill either? I'd prefer spending 100 dollars a month, knowing that if something happens it's covered instead of having to cough up thousands of dollars at once for an expensive surgery

It's well known, tried, and true: socialized healthcare systems are more efficient than social-security ones, which in turn are more efficient than private insurance ones. Do you think it's a coincidence that the US has one of the highest health-expenses per capita, yet overall most European systems are ranked higher? Keeping that extra change is costing you your health and your money in the long run.

I have insurance and I don't get drunk and crash into things with my car.

That is probably true, but the healthcare system in the USA is dysfunctional and overpriced for other reasons. Namely that uninsured patients still must be treated in emergencies by law and the hospital foots the bill. The main thing Obamacare was intended to remedy. Like my car insurance being required by law, now health insurance is required too. Unlike taxes, my how much I pay for insurance rate scales with how much of a risk I am. More or less. Same basic goal, different outlook on getting there.

Placing responsibility and liability on the individual allows for greater individual freedom. There is a balancing point of course. Anyways, I wasn't trying to start up some silly political or philosophical discussion, I got carried away discussing something similar and it was just on my mind when it was provoked through causal lurking here.

Too bad you're not the only person on the road. You don't have to do anything for an accident to happen. Someone else could be drunk & driving and crash into you, killing himself in the process. You are not the only factor for your health, scary as that may sound.

Actually, our healthcare is slowly worsening due to conservative politics currently being a dominant force, they are continually removing money from our healthcare to balance budget for fun things like prisons we don't need, and using our slowly deteriorating health care system as evidence we should go private.

Edit: though, i was recently hospitalized due to an infection that could have been a kind of tumor (but wasn't) and i will say my care was rather expedient and adequate.

Edit Edit: somehow i missed like a whole page of responses, oops

Edit Edit Edit: Actually, my previously explained situation is a very good argument for how essential a health care system is, if i was in a country with a totally privatized healthcare system, my parents couldn't afford insurance and i was a little younger, i wouldn't have been able to afford my treatment. Another week of not being treated and i very easily could have died from my throat closing up, and if that didn't kill me, being entirely unable to eat or drink would have in the very least caused some really serious problems.

Listen to me: If your apendex is infected and it bursts, you will die. If your parents don't want you to go to the doctor, screw them. Steal your insurance card and walk to a doctor if you have to.
This so much.
I had a burst apendix. I was in hospital for a few weeks. This is really bad.
Actually, it was Meckel's diverticulum, but nvm that.

+1

Being responsible may decrease your chances of these things happening, but unless you're superhuman, you can't prevent other drivers being drunk or your genes predisposing you to heart disease.
